2014 Joint Conference with GPSolo

An “Aria” is defined as “an accompanied elaborate melody “; that certainly describes the first-ever joint conference between the Group Legal Services Association (formerly API) and the ABA GPSolo Division held at the ARIA Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. Over 200 attendees participated in the elaborate melody of 31 leadership meetings, 28 CLE sessions, 19 networking opportunities and 5 social events over 3 days, not to the myriad of sponsors and exhibitors. Hopefully not everything that happened in Vegas, stayed in Vegas and the attendees took home practice tips and business cards to help increase their practice, improve their plans and save time. Staff from both groups heard positive feedback about the venue, the sessions and the energy from the attendees and the sponsors. Although we didn’t get very many evaluations returned (we’ll work on that for next year!), those we did receive were enthusiastic.

For those who were unable to attend, you were missed! The sessions covered topics from Bankruptcy and Estate Planning to iPhone apps and Document Automation in the Cloud. By partnering with GPSolo, the GLSA was able to take advantage of their pool of local speakers who presented sessions on Gaming and Las Vegas and Ethics and Marketing.

In addition to CLE and networking, the GLSA Board met and at their annual meeting elected three new board members, Brian Caron, Stephen Ginsberg, and Steve Monks. New Board President, Len Feltoon, is focusing on increasing sponsorship and the board is hard at work with ten very active committees. The Standing Committee on Group & Prepaid Legal Services is also hard at work looking at creating standards for group legal services plans to increase visibility and consumer confidence. If you are interested in serving on any committees, please log on to the new website www.GLSAonline.org and in your profile, you can add or change committees. Or on the homepage of the Members Only section, you can click on Join Committee and read descriptions and sign up!

Next year the Conference will be in Philadelphia, April 16-18. The planning committee is looking at a revamped schedule that keeps the same CLE, but allows for some time in the afternoons for exploring the City of Brotherly Love. If you have topics you’d like to see covered, speakers you’ve seen who were memorable or any other suggestions for the conference, please contact Haley Swilling at haley.swilling@americanbar.org and we’ll forward your ideas to the Conference Planning Committee.
